Glimpse of the entry courtyard of the Daxing Villa. Located on the rural outskirts of Beijing, the project was conceived as a collection of volumes that pinwheel around a central courtyard, where a daylight-filled internal garden gives focus and light to the inward living spaces.

Daxing Villa - Reading Room

We are very excited to share a glimpse of the Reading Room, in Metaamo’s newly constructed Daxing Villa, on the outskirts of Beijing. The villa is clad in massive, grey GFRC panels, with floor to ceiling windows that allow daylight and nature to envelop the space.

ARCHITECTURE of.by.for PEOPLE

Everyday, the curatorial proposal for the XII IABsp, shifts our focus from high-profile architecture to a world where most people don’t have the money, resources and power to control their physical surroundings. A world where everyday people use behavioral ingenuity to shape their experience of the built environment.

Architecture of.by.for People is an installation/game designed to give anyone the opportunity to tap into their inner architect. We’ve all met this inner architect. It’s the architect in a child that turns a yard into a fully designed imaginary world, in the person who moves his/her body into position for a perfect view of the sunset, in the skateboarder who turns mundane surfaces into a skate park, and the person who whispers or walks softly in order to control the acoustics of a space.

of.by.for is designed to give people control over architecture through action and play. Three toolkits distill architecture into themed “action books” dealing with Form, Materials and Function, each with its own instruction manual for behaviors that create architectural experiences. A collection of “Architecture hacks” that will live and grow after the XII IABsp in the form of a social media platform where everyday people post everyday stories about resource-free everyday architecture.

Columbia Gorge House / Interiors

We’re happy to share another little glimpse of a project that’s just finishing up core and shell construction (landscape / interiors / furniture are all still in the works).  

The Columbia Gorge House is a new single-family residence, nestled into the slopes high above the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area.  The house’s ridgeline geometry torques to mediate between eastern views of nearby mountains, and the southern presence of Mt. Hood beyond / the Columbia River below.  Twin ‘fox-ear’ skylights facing southeast bring focus to the interior, while washing the public spaces with clerestory daylight. The house is clad in dark, composite shingles made of recycled material, and warm western red cedar.

New Skyline Residence in the Tualatin Mountains

We're excited to share that we've started Schematic Design on a new 2,200 SF single family residence on a near ridgetop site in Portland's West Hills.  The steeply sloping site affords sweeping westerly views of Beaverton and the Tualatin Valley below, as well as the Coast Range Mountains beyond. Here are two sunset panoramas that were recently taken at the site.

AVE P MOB wins a pair of SAA Design Awards

We're excited to share the news that AVE P MOB has received a pair of SAA Design Awards (a Merit Award and a People's Choice Award).

The recently completed project is a new 41,000sf medical office building sited in Saskatoon, Canada's Riversdale District, and aims to give the community and its users a health-minded environment in every way possible. 

The building explores new programmatic territory as a result of the disassembling of the traditional medical office into a sharing-economy type program.  By removing the privacy-driven patient exam rooms from the doctor's offices and recollecting them into a state of the art shared / managed clinic, what were traditionally closed offices can effectively become open, light-filled, flexible workspaces that are tailored to user needs.  Moreover, digital management of the shared / managed clinic enables the group to drastically reduce the number of offices that previously would sit empty, while patients were not visiting or while doctors were elsewhere.  The four-story building has a public ground floor with leasable retail space, lobby, and a public cafe. The upper two floors house doctor's offices and a small amount of exam rooms, while the second floor holds the heart of the building -- a light-filled atrium space that acts as a lifted living room, allowing easy public access while maintaining some separation from the street, and offering direct access to the shared clinic spaces, which all occupy that floor.  

The project was a collaboration between Oxbow Architecture and Metaamo.

New SW Portland Residence in Design Development

Another project on the boards -- we are currently in the Design Development phase for a new 2,500 SF ground-up residence for a young family of six in SW Portland, near Gabriel Park.  The three-level house carefully conforms to the contours of the sloping site, and features airy, double-height living spaces, and an upper level sunset terrace that affords views of nearby Gabriel Park, the distant Coast Range Mountains, and the spectacular sunsets that are so common to the area.  See above photo for a taste of what that will be like!
